GV - Governing Vessel
督脉 - Dū mài
The Governing Vessel (Du Mai) stands as the primary regulator of Yang energy in the body, earning its title as the "Sea of Yang Qi." Unlike the twelve principal meridians, it is one of the eight extraordinary vessels that serve as reservoirs of vital energy. The GV runs along the central axis of the body - the spine, linking the body's core structure with consciousness.
This vessel governs our capacity for self-regulation, mental clarity, and spiritual development. It controls the brain, spinal cord, and central nervous system, making it crucial for cognitive function, memory, and consciousness itself. The Governing Vessel also represents our inner authority, leadership capacity, and ability to govern our own life with wisdom and strength.
Meridian Pathway & Flow
Direction
The Governing Vessel ascends along the spine from the perineum to the upper lip
Pathway
- Origin: Begins at GV-1 (Changqiang) at the tip of the coccyx/tailbone
- Internal Branch: One branch originates in the pelvic cavity and perineum
- Spinal Ascent: Ascends along the center of the spine through all vertebrae
- Neck Path: Continues up the cervical spine and back of the neck
- Head Path: Travels over the crown of the head along the midline
- Face Descent: Descends along the center of the forehead and nose
- End Point: Terminates at GV-28 (Yinjiao) inside the upper lip at the gum line
- Connection: Connects with Conception Vessel and all Yang meridians
Active Time
Continuously active as extraordinary vessel, peak influence varies by individual constitution

GV Protocols
Spinal Health and Yang Strengthening (15-20 minutes)
- Begin with mindful breathing or meditation to connect with purpose
- Start with GV-4 (Mingmen) with warming, sustained pressure for kidney yang
- Work GV-14 (Dazhui) for overall yang qi regulation and immune support
- Apply pressure to GV-16 (Fengfu) for brain and nervous system support
- Focus on GV-20 (Baihui) for mental clarity and spiritual connection
- End with GV-26 (Shuigou) for consciousness and emergency revival if needed
Mental Clarity and Focus Enhancement (10-12 minutes)
- For brain fog, poor concentration, or cognitive decline
- Focus on GV-20 (Baihui) with gentle, sustained pressure
- Work GV-24 (Shenting) for mental clarity and wisdom
- Apply pressure to GV-16 for brain circulation and function

Considerations
Continuous Influence
- As extraordinary vessel, GV is always active - work can be done any time
- Morning practice aligns with yang qi rising for the day
Spiritual Practice
- Combine with meditation, prayer, or spiritual practices
- Set intentions for highest good and spiritual development
- Create a calm, supportive environment and approach with respect
Posture and Alignment
- Maintain good spinal posture to support GV flow
- Practice exercises that promote spinal health
- Consider chiropractic or structural bodywork support
Mental Hygiene
- Engage in activities that promote mental clarity
- Limit mental overwhelm and excessive stimulation
- Practice mindfulness and present-moment awareness
Leadership Development
- Take on appropriate leadership responsibilities

- Develop moral character and ethical strength
Yang Qi Support
- Engage in appropriate physical activity
- Maintain warm body temperature
- Eat yang-supporting foods and avoid excessive cold/raw foods
Precautions
Pressure and Safety
- Always use gentle, non-forceful pressure along spinal points
- Avoid pressure directly on vertebrae - work between them
- GV-26 requires firm pressure only in emergency situations
Spinal Injuries
- Never work on acute spinal injuries without medical clearance
- Chronic spinal conditions require healthcare provider coordination
- Stop immediately if experiencing shooting pain or numbness
Neurological Conditions
- Serious neurological conditions require medical supervision
- GV work complements but never replaces neurological treatment
- Monitor for any worsening of neurological symptoms
Emergency Use
- GV-26 for emergency consciousness revival should only be used in true emergencies
- Always call emergency services while applying first aid
- Learn proper emergency response techniques
Mental Health
- Serious depression or suicidal thoughts require immediate professional help
- GV work can intensify spiritual experiences - be prepared
- Create support system for spiritual and emotional processing
Children and Elderly
- Use extremely gentle pressure with children and elderly
- Constitutional weakness requires very gradual strengthening
- Always have parent/caregiver present when working with children
Pregnancy
- Most GV points safe during pregnancy with gentle pressure
- Avoid strong yang stimulation in first trimester
- Focus on calming and stabilizing rather than strongly activating
Spiritual Sensitivity
- GV work can trigger profound spiritual experiences
- Be prepared for increased psychic sensitivity or visions
- Ground yourself after intensive GV practice
Professional Guidance
- Complex spinal or neurological issues benefit from professional TCM treatment
- Coordinate with medical care for serious conditions
- Consider referral for structural bodywork when needed
