LI-3 - Third Interval
三间 - Sān jiān
Point Region: Hand
LI-3, or 'Sanjian' (meaning 'Third Space'), is the 'Shu-Stream' and 'Wood' point of the Large Intestine channel. Located in the third space along the index finger, this point acts as a central hub where the energy of the meridian begins to gather and circulate more powerfully.
As a 'Shu-Stream' point, Sanjian is often used for joint pain and swelling along the channel, and is particularly good for the fingers, hands, and wrist. The 'stream' of energy at this point becomes more substantial, like a small creek that begins to flow with more purpose. This makes it an excellent point for a wide range of conditions, as it can both tonify (build up) and disperse (break down) energy as needed.
Its 'Wood' element connection links it to growth, movement, and flexibility. This is reflected in its ability to address issues of stiffness and limited range of motion, helping to restore a sense of ease and fluidity to the body's movements.
